A driver police say is responsible for a South Carolina accident claims that he was not driving at the time. The family of a 16-year-old girl has plenty of questions about the auto accident that killed her. The first is how and why she was in that car in the first place.

As for the accident, the South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that the car the teenager was riding in was traveling east on Interstate 26. The driver lost control of the vehicle, which ended up veering over the left shoulder of the roadway. It then careened across all of the eastbound traffic lanes and into the guardrail on the right side.

During the crash, the 23-year-old that the police assert was the driver and the teen were thrown from the vehicle. Both suffered injuries and were transported to an area hospital. Within hours of the crash, the teen was dead. Miraculously, a third person in the vehicle escaped injury.

Authorities say the driver was impaired when he got behind the wheel. The driver, however, claims that the teen was driving at the time of the crash. It is not known what the vehicle’s third occupant told authorities.

The family of the victim may find some answers to their questions through both the criminal proceedings and the filing of a wrongful death claim. If it is documented in civil court that the man who is believed to be responsible for the auto accident negligently caused it, the court may consider an award of damages for the victim’s family. Nothing will bring back the teen back to life, but any monetary relief awarded could help with the expenses the family incurred due to her premature death.
