The majority of the public knows that drunk driving causes numerous deaths each year. One factor that increases the devastation in accidents caused by impaired driving is that these incidents are some of the most preventable. Anytime a drunk driver gets behind the wheel of a car, he or she puts everyone in the vehicle and on the roads in danger of being involved in a car accident.
South Carolina Highway Patrol officers and local authorities presume alcohol to be a factor in a recent single-car accident. The driver is suspected of being under the influence when he lost control of his vehicle. The car hit a median, careened off the road and slammed into a tree. There was one passenger in the driver’s vehicle at the time of the crash.
When the car hit the tree, the passenger suffered fatal injuries from the impact of the collision. The driver survived the crash, but sustained unknown injuries. Emergency personnel transported the man to an area hospital for treatment. Reports did not indicate his current condition. He is facing charges of driving without a license and felony DUI.
The aftermath of an alcohol-related accident often affects more than just the driver. In addition to facing charges in a South Carolina criminal court, the driver could face a wrongful death claim from the family of the deceased passenger. If authorities’ suspicions are correct, and the driver was impaired at the time of the car accident, the victim’s family could receive financial restitution for damages such as pain and suffering and the costs associated with burying a loved one.
