A multi-car accident is always tragic. However, a car accident is even more so when an innocent bystander is killed. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened in a South Carolina case in which an 18-year-old was killed when she was simply sitting in a car waiting for a traffic light to change.
The accident happened at about 5:40 p.m. on a July day in Surfside Beach. A 34-year-old man was driving north on a frontage road that was parallel to Highway 17. Though the reason is still unclear, the man crossed the median and entered Highway 17 Business. As he did so, he struck five other cars which were stopped due to a red light.
The young woman’s cause of death was said to be mass trauma to vital organs as a result of the accident. Another person was airlifted from the car accident, though the nature of the injuries suffered was not initially disclosed. It is unknown how the occupants in the other cars are faring. It is also not clear what happened to the driver who caused the wreck.
Tragically, nothing can undo what has already occurred; the teenager’s family and friends must now cope with the sudden and shocking loss. There were no initial reports about any citations issued to the driver who caused the fatal car accident. As the family searches for answers, South Carolina courts may be called upon to decide allegations of negligence attached to claims for wrongful death and personal injury. For now, it can only be hoped the family members find the strength to cope with their loss as they struggle to accept the consequences of a seemingly senseless tragedy.
