On a recent Wednesday morning, a public transit bus was transporting passengers with special needs to a day program. Unfortunately, the bus became involved in an auto accident that caused several people to require medical attention. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation into the incident.
First reports regarding the incident indicate that the driver of the bus had steered to avoid what turned out to be a basket in the road. The bus flipped over and did not come to a stop until it had slid into the oncoming lanes of traffic, where it slammed head-on into a pickup truck. A second pickup truck then hit the back of the bus.
The bus driver and several passengers were injured. One passenger was trapped and had to be freed by emergency personnel. That person suffered serious injuries and, at last report, remains in stable condition after requiring surgery. The driver and passenger of the pickup hit by the bus suffered unidentified injuries as well. The driver of the second pickup escaped injury.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol does not yet know whether charges will be filed in connection with the auto accident. Regardless, the seriously injured victims retain the right to file personal injury claims against the party or parties deemed responsible. The city or county that employs the bus driver may also be named in any suit — and could be held liable — since the bus driver was performing his job duties at the time of the accident. Any financial restitution recovered could help with current and future medical costs along with any other damages allowable under state laws.
