Recently, a South Carolina State Transport Police officer was rushing along the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 with his lights and sirens activated. The officer was attempting to keep abreast with a speeding vehicle that was also headed south but was actually in the northbound lanes of the roadway. Before the officer was able to get the driver of the speeding vehicle to pull over, the other driver crashed into oncoming vehicles. The wrong-way car accident killed four people and injured others.
Six vehicles were involved in the crash, which occurred at approximately 11 p.m. A witness traveling near a pickup truck that was involved in the crash heard the collision and saw the pickup thrown onto its side. The pickup almost went over the concrete barrier separating the lanes of travel. The witness realized right away that at least one person suffered fatal injuries. A journalist at the scene reported that the wreckage of one vehicle caught fire.
The wrong-way driver, a 60-year-old man, was one of the four who died in the accident. The other three who died were a 21-year-old woman, a 22-year-old woman and a 27-year-old man. The younger man survived long enough to be taken to the hospital but later died.
The others died at the scene. It is unknown which vehicles the deceased victims were in at the time of the collisions. Other people suffered unknown injuries and were taken to hospitals in the area.
The families of the deceased victims and anyone seriously injured may file civil actions against the estate of the driver and any other party with an ownership interest in the vehicle the man was operating. Providing a South Carolina court with evidence that the man negligently caused or contributed to the deaths and injuries could lead to an award of damages. Any financial restitution could help defray the expenses incurred because of this tragic car accident.
