Each year, drunk drivers cause numerous accidents, here in South Carolina and across the country. Many of those crashes result in serious injury or death. Law enforcement officials believe that alcohol played a role in a recent car accident that took the lives of two people and sent four others to the hospital.

Officials report that the driver suspected of being intoxicated slammed his vehicle into a vehicle occupied by a husband and wife. Three other vehicles were involved in the crash as well. The woman driving the broad sided car was trapped in the wreckage.

It is said she suffered blunt force trauma and a cardiac arrest at the scene before she was freed and taken to a hospital in the area, where she died. The man in the car was ejected during the crash. He died of blunt force trauma at the scene.

There were four injured people among the other three vehicles. The injuries suffered by one of them were serious enough to substantiate being transported by helicopter to a hospital. The remaining injured people were taken by ambulance. The 52-year-old driver of the pickup truck that crashed into the married couple’s car was taken into custody. He is being held at the Oconee County Detention Center on a surety bond in the amount of $100,000.

As the criminal case proceeds, the families of the deceased couple may exercise their rights to file wrongful death claims against the driver believed responsible for this tragic car accident, seeking damages incurred as the result of the loss of their loved ones. Further, the injured parties may file personal injury claims. Successfully litigated claims could result in financial awards, including financial restitution to cover those monetary losses and other damages permitted under South Carolina law.
