In certain types of legal cases, such as personal injury or wrongful death claims, an attorney is only paid if he or she wins a case. This type of arrangement is called a contingency fee agreement and is universal. The lawyer agrees to accept a fixed percentage of the recovery, often one-third. If a settlement is reached, or a verdict is awarded, the attorney’s fee will come out of the compensation you are awarded. In the event, you lose your case, neither you or the attorney will receive any money.
