Employees who work on the nation’s roadways face a wide range of inherent workplace dangers. There are a multitude of safety precautions in place to safeguard against aworkplace injury accident, but no matter how cautious a worker may be, the risk of injury is extremely high when working near moving traffic. The recent death of a South Carolina Department of Transportation worker illustrates the hazards inherent in this line of work.

The 21-year-old worker was walking in the emergency lane of Interstate 20 in Lexington County at the time of the incident. The driver, a 39-year-old man, approached the worker from the rear. Investigators believe that his vehicle swerved to the right just before striking the worker, although there is no knowledge of why the driver would do so.

After striking the worker, the driver continued to travel approximately half a mile further down the Interstate before pulling off the roadway. When police arrived, they arrested the driver under suspicion of DUI. He has since been charged with leaving the scene of an accident and driving under the influence.

For the family of the young man killed in this terrible South Carolina workplace injury accident, there are no words to adequately address their grief. As the holidays approach, this will likely be an especially difficult time for them. While their thoughts are likely elsewhere at this time, they do have the right to obtain workers’ compensation death benefits in relation to this devastating incident. Such benefits can assist with financial issues surrounding the man’s final expenses and loss of income if he left behind dependents.
