According to the National Safety Council (NSC), car accident-related fatalities during the first half of 2015 are up almost 15 percent when compared to the same time period in 2014. This percentage increase includes 2.2 million serious car accident-related injuries. The rise in deaths, according to the NSC, is attributed to several factors including distracted driving and more drivers on the road due to an improvement in the economy as a whole and a drop in gas prices. Statistics compiled by the NCS revealed the following information, in part:
Fatalities due to car accidents: 18,600 in the first 6 months of 2015 compared to 16,400 during the first 6 months of 2014;
Studies show the most common causes of car accidents include: distracted driving, driver fatigue, drunk driving, speeding, aggressive driving and hazardous weather conditions. Despite laws in place in several states, including South Carolina, that ban texting while driving or cell phones altogether, distracted driving is still a leading cause of car accidents nationwide.
