The South Carolina Highway Patrol reports that four South Carolina residents were killed in a fiery car accident according to WLTX 19 News. The fatal car accident occurred on Highway 378 during rush hour on a Friday. A highway patrol officer disclosed that the collision involved four separate cars: two SUVs, a van and a pickup truck. The pickup truck, which was traveling west on the highway, crossed the centerline and sideswiped the van, which was traveling east. The impact caused the van to spin out of control and crash into the other two vehicles which burst into flames. The catastrophic crash claimed the lives of all in one of the SUVs and the driver of the pickup truck. The remaining victims were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment. The status of the survivors remains unknown and the crash is still under investigation.

Traffic Deaths on the Rise

According to the National Safety Council (NSC), car accident-related fatalities during the first half of 2015 are up almost 15 percent when compared to the same time period in 2014. This percentage increase includes 2.2 million serious car accident-related injuries. • Estimated cost of car accidents: $152 billion in the first 6 months of 2015 compared to $122 during the first 6 months of 2014;
• Distracted drivers: according to distraction.gov, 3,154 people are killed and 424,000 are injured as a result of car accidents with distracted drivers;

Studies show the most common causes of car accidents include: distracted driving, driver fatigue, drunk driving, speeding, aggressive driving and hazardous weather conditions. Despite laws in place in several states, including South Carolina, that ban texting while driving or cell phones altogether, distracted driving is still a leading cause of car accidents nationwide.
