South Carolina drivers take on a significant responsibility when they get behind the wheel of a car. Teenagers lacking in experience may not yet understand the enormity of the duty they undertake when driving. Unfortunately, some teenagers only discover the importance of their duty to others on the road after being involved in a car accident.
Shortly after 9:25 p.m. on a recent Friday night, the South Carolina Highway Patrol received a report of a crash involving two vehicles. On arrival at the scene, they discovered one person dead and several others injured. Their investigation revealed that the 18-year-old driver of one of the two vehicles was heading west. As his SUV approached an intersection, the driver failed to obey the stop sign.
A northbound minivan was already in the intersection, and the westbound vehicle slammed into it. The 49-year-old driver of the minivan succumbed to fatal injuries at the scene. Her passenger and the occupants of the teen’s vehicle were all transported to an area hospital with unidentified injuries. There current conditions are not known.
At last report, officials charged the SUV driver with ignoring the stop sign. The investigation into this car accident is not yet complete, and additional charges may be considered. The family of the deceased driver and the injured passengers will be entitled to file civil actions as well. Before a court will consider making an award of damages in a wrongful death or personal injury suit, it must be established that the SUV driver’s negligence caused or substantially contributed to the accident and the death and injuries that resulted.
