Family says South Carolina motorcycle accident was preventable

Many motorcycle riders are aware of the additional dangers they face on the road when compared to those in passenger vehicles. Even the most vigilant motorcycle rider could become involved in an accident. In a motorcycle accident, a rider is much more vulnerable to injury and even death than the occupants of other vehicles.

For example, in the early morning hours of Oct. 24, the South Carolina Highway Patrol was called to the scene of an accident on Ocean Highway. The car vs. motorcycle accident sent the motorcycle rider to a local hospital with unspecified injuries. Despite the efforts of emergency personnel both at the scene and the hospital, the rider succumbed to his injuries that same day. The rider had been wearing a helmet at the time of the crash.

The preliminary investigation into the accident revealed that the passenger vehicle involved in the collision failed to yield the right-of-way to the motorcycle as it crossed the highway, and the two vehicles collided. There is no word on the condition of the driver or whether there were any other occupants of that vehicle. The South Carolina Highway Patrol is conducting the investigation into the accident, and so far charges have not been filed.

The family of the victim of this car vs. motorcycle accident will not only have to cope with the loss of their loved one, but also with the financial losses that often accompany fatal accidents. It could be some time before the full impact of the financial losses is realized. In the coming months, the family will have to deal with medical bills, burial and funeral expenses and possibly even the loss of his income. These expenses may not be of much importance in the days immediately following his death, but at some point, they will have to be dealt with. At least some of these expenses could be recovered through the filing of a civil action.
