While many readers may think of work accidents including dangerous scaffolding, heavy machinery and tall heights, accidents can occur anywhere, on any job site. Recently, a South Carolina sanitation worker was injured on the job after being run over by a garbage truck after he fell off of it. Like anyone injured on the job in our state, he may begin the process of filing a workers’ compensation claim, as his injuries were listed as serious.

According to reports, the sanitation worker was hanging on to the back of the garbage truck waiting for the truck to stop. The man then fell off of the back of the truck as the driver, a 50-year-old woman, stopped and began reversing. This action caused the truck to roll over the man’s leg, causing the serious injuries.

Though reports indicate that his injuries are non-life threatening, injuries of this nature may require time away from work and recovery expenses. Authorities do not believe that the sanitation worker was a city employee, but are unsure who owned the garbage truck. So far, no reports have indicated that any charges will be filed.

Being injured on the job is a reality that affects many people in South Carolina. When these injuries occur, workers may feel the strain of lost wages, medical and recovery expenses and other losses. During these times, it may be beneficial for workers to consider what rights they have under our state’s workers’ compensation laws. While filing workers’ compensation claims can be challenging, it is possible to successfully obtain the much needed benefits.
