Last September, an 18-year-old Coastal Carolina University student was run down as she was crossing Highway 544. When police arrived at the scene, the vehicle that had hit her was nowhere to be found. Even though the driver of the vehicle that hit the teen fled the scene right after the car accident, he did return to the scene some time later. He turned out to be a fellow student at the South Carolina university.

According to reports, the young woman was on her way to “Might as Well,” a local bar. The young woman that was struck ended up dying as a result of her injuries. Authorities determined that the teen died from extensive head trauma and a blood alcohol level of 0.153 percent. This blood alcohol level is almost twice the legal limit in South Carolina, which is 0.08.

The driver of the car was not injured in the accident. The young man that hit the teen was recently indicted by a grand jury for fleeing the scene of an accident. It is not yet known why the driver initially fled the scene back in September.

The family of this young woman retains the right to file a wrongful death claim against the driver in connection with the car accident. If they are able to show that the driver was negligent and that his negligence caused or even contributed to her death, the court may award the family the damages and costs they have been forced to incur due to her untimely death. There is no amount of monetary compensation that could ever replace this teen in her family’s life, but filing a civil action may give them a sense of closure and justice they may not otherwise be able to receive.
