A man is being held in a South Carolina jail on charges relating to an accident in which one of the passengers in the vehicle he was operating on Sept. 8 died. So far, the 19-year-old driver in this fatal car accident has been charged with DUI, marijuana possession and possession of an unidentified controlled substance. As the investigation continues, additional charges could be filed against the driver.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol’s preliminary investigation reveals that the accident only involved one vehicle. The vehicle was traveling north on Interstate 95 when the driver somehow lost control of the vehicle. The vehicle went off the left side of the interstate and was hurled into a tree.
One passenger died at the scene as the result of injuries sustained in the accident. The driver, along with the three other passengers in the vehicle at the time of the fatal car accident were all injured and had to be taken to a local hospital to be treated. The nature of the injuries sustained by the driver and three other passengers in not known, and neither are their current conditions.
As the investigation is concluded and criminal proceedings progress, the family of the deceased passenger is having to come to terms with the sudden, unexpected loss of a loved one. When they are emotionally able, the family may exercise their right to file a wrongful death claim against the driver. Doing so certainly won’t bring back their loved one or fill the gap the loss leaves in the family, but it may help the family deal with the financial impact this tragic car accident has created.
