Every South Carolina driver relies on the other drivers on the road to obey the rules of the road. Even so, most drivers remain vigilant in an attempt to anticipate potential hazards. Unfortunately, it is not possible to prepare for or avoid every danger posed by other drivers. Those unpredictable actions often lead to a car accident.
For instance, when a driver is unable to maintain his or her lane for some reason, oncoming traffic may not have the opportunity to avoid a collision. This could be what happened in a recent accident that sent several people to the hospital and killed one woman. The woman and an unknown number of passengers in her vehicle were traveling westbound on South Carolina Highway 418 when an eastbound vehicle strayed into her lane.
The two vehicles collided head-on. The driver of the westbound vehicle suffered fatal injuries in the wreck, to which she succumbed at the scene. The passengers in her vehicle and the occupants of the other vehicle, including the driver, all suffered unspecified injuries for which they were taken to an area hospital for treatment. Further information regarding the condition of each injured person was not reported.
The car accident is still under investigation by the Greenville County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol. Meanwhile, the surviving family members of the 32-year-old deceased driver are surely grieving her loss, and the other victims are recovering from their injuries. The deceased victim’s family and any seriously injured victims retain the right to file civil actions against the eastbound driver, who could also be criminally charged in the crash. Proving the driver was negligent could lead to an award of monetary damages. Any financial relief awarded could help in the injured victims and the family of the deceased woman as they struggle to move forward from this tragic incident.
