South Carolina’s roads are shared by vehicles of all shapes and sizes. Each driver is responsible for diligently looking for other vehicles — especially smaller vehicles such as motorcycles, mopeds and bicycles. Drivers of these vehicles are particularly vulnerable in a car accident due to the fact that they are exposed to the elements and not protected by the framework of an enclosed vehicle.

At approximately 7 p.m. on a recent Saturday, the driver of a pickup truck reportedly failed to pay close enough attention to the other vehicles on the road. Troopers with the South Carolina Highway Patrol say that the pickup truck slammed into a moped. The 50-year-old driver of the moped suffered multiple traumas to his body, and he succumbed to those injuries at the scene.

The 53-year-old pickup driver is suspected of being under the influence at the time of the crash. He was taken into custody for felony DUI and other crminal charges connected to the moped driver’s death. At last report, he was being held without bail. No further information regarding the incident was available.

While the investigation into this fatal car accident proceeds, the family of the victim is forced to bury their loved one. The funeral and burial alone can present an unexpected financial burden to the family, along with other monetary damages that may also be incurred by the family. They may be awarded restitution for those damages by a South Carolina court if they are able to prove the allegedly impaired driver’s negligence led to the death of their family member.
