Unfortunately, all too often one of the most common reasons behind a car accident is drunk driving. Those who decide to drive while drunk often have shorter reaction times than those not under the influence, and they typically cannot respond to traffic as well as they should be able to do. Sadly, this can cause major accidents, as may have been the case with a South Carolina car accident that happened in Beaufort County, leaving six people injured and trapped in the wreckage.

The accident happened recently in an intersection in which two cars collided after one driver had allegedly been drinking. After seeing the wreckage that remained after the car accident, the claimed at-fault driver fled the scene, until he was tracked down by canine units. The 36-year-old man has since been charged with multiple criminal charges, including two counts of felony driving under the influence and hit-and-run with injuries.

The fact that he ran away from the scene is especially disturbing because the crash injured six people, including some in his own car. Two of the victims were airlifted by helicopter to a hospital as they sustained serious injuries from the crash, and two others had to be extricated from the wreckage using the Jaws of Life.

Worst yet, this is apparently not the first time the accused man has been in this kind of an accident. In 2007, a similar accident occurred in which he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence, driving without a license and leaving the scene of an accident.

For those who have suffered as a result of the car accident, there are no words at what they must feel knowing that they were injured in such an avoidable accident. As they hopefully continue to recover, it is hoped that this will be the last accident the driver causes. Furthermore, it is hoped that South Carolina residents who are considering driving while under the influence will have second thoughts and opt instead for a designated driver to transport them safely and keep others on the roadway free from harm.
