South Carolina drivers may agree that many car crashes on two lane highways occur while someone is attempting to pass another vehicle. Even if a driver technically has the option to pass legally, the traffic conditions need to be taken into account. When a driver fails to keep these things in mind, it dramatically increases the probability of a car accident.

The South Carolina Department of Public Safety (DPS) reports that a recent accident occurred when the driver of a car attempted to pass another vehicle on Highway 176. The car slammed head-on into a pickup truck approaching from the opposite direction. At present, it appears that no other vehicles were involved in the crash.

The driver of the car survived the crash, and was taken to a hospital in the area via helicopter. Despite the efforts of medical personnel both at the scene and at the hospital, the driver succumbed to the injuries suffered in the accident. The driver of the pickup truck also suffered injuries described only as not life-threatening. That driver’s current condition is not known.

Officials with DPS say the deceased driver was improperly passing at the time of the car accident. The investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol is ongoing. Depending on the severity of the pickup truck driver’s injuries, he or she could be facing a lengthy recovery. Medical costs and lost wages can add up quickly in that case. Filing a personal injury claim against the estate of the deceased driver could result in an award of damages, if negligence is proven.
