The South Carolina Highway Patrol closed the southbound lanes of Interstate 85 on the evening of Sept. 25 in order to conduct their investigation into a crash that killed one person. The multiple car and 18-wheeler accident sent four other people to the hospital with varying injuries. The victim that was killed was in one of the two cars involved.
By the morning of Sept. 26, the South Carolina Highway Patrol brought out an accident reconstruction team to help determine what caused the collision. At this time, none of the details gathered thus far in the investigation have been released. There was also no indication of whether charges will be filed.
The woman that died was a passenger in one of the cars. The driver of the car that she was in sustained unknown injuries and was taken to an area hospital, as were two people in the second vehicle. The extent of their injuries are also unknown. The truck driver does not appear to have been seriously injured, but was taken to the hospital for observation nonetheless.
It could be some time before the official report regarding this multiple car and 18-wheeler accident is released. Until the investigation is complete, it may be a good idea for all of the drivers involved to find out what their rights and responsibilities are under our state law. As for the family of the deceased passenger and the passengers that were injured, they have the right to file civil actions to cover the damages such as pain and suffering, medical bills, lost wages and funeral costs.
